Welcome!

Here you will find our online newsletter blog, field notes. Through our careers supporting the National Science Foundation’s program of research in the Arctic, we have a “front-row seat” in the theater of arctic research. With this blog, we bring you glimpses of our view, via updates from the field, feature stories on the research we support and the people we meet in the Arctic, and links to outside media stories.

Kip Rithner discovered polar research support back in 1990. At the time, supporting National Science Foundation-funded polar research seemed like an interesting diversion from her real life. And then it became her real life. She works alongside long-time friends and colleagues—two and four-legged alike—at Polar Field Services, in Littleton, Colorado.

Rachel Walker is a freelance writer based in Boulder, Colorado. She covers environmental issues, outdoor adventure, and more for a variety of publications.

Opinions, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in PFS’ field notes newsletter do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF. Our thanks to those who provide news updates, photos, and story ideas. Please send feedback and suggestions to kip@polarfield.com.
